Frequently Asked Questions

A wound on the foot or lower leg that will not heal brings up a lot of questions, and PRP is one of the options patients ask about most. Here are clear answers to the questions we hear most often about non-healing and diabetic wound care.

PRP is one of several regenerative options we consider, and whether it suits you comes down to the wound itself and your overall health. We make that decision together at your visit, lay out the other options that also fit, and never present it as a guaranteed fix.

That is the situation our physicians concentrate on, for wounds of the foot and lower leg. Bring us a diabetic ulcer or a non-healing sore that earlier care has not resolved, and we will tell you honestly whether our wound and limb-salvage approach can move it forward.

A wound that is not improving should not sit, so we hold room for urgent cases and can often get you in within a day. The sooner a foot or leg wound is looked at, the more options tend to stay open.

Most major insurance accepted, including Medicare. We will verify your benefits and explain your options. What any one plan covers for a specific treatment still varies with your plan and your wound, so we check first and tell you what we find rather than promising anything up front.

PRP for Wound Care in Plano: How Platelet-Rich Plasma Helps a Wound That Will Not Heal

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a wound-care treatment that uses a small sample of your own blood to help a stubborn wound start healing again. At Lonestar Podiatry & Wound Care in Plano, a sample is drawn and concentrated so the platelets and the growth factors they release can be applied to the wound. Those growth factors signal the body to form new tissue and new blood vessels, which is often what a chronic wound stuck in the same inflamed state for weeks is missing.

PRP is used for non-healing wounds of the foot and lower leg, most often diabetic foot ulcers, and also venous leg ulcers, slow-healing surgical wounds, and wounds tied to neuropathy or poor circulation. It is one regenerative option within a complete plan, not a stand-alone cure. We still clean and debride the wound, offload pressure, manage any infection, and use advanced dressings or skin substitutes when they are needed. Because the plasma comes from your own body, the in-office treatment is low risk, and we confirm whether you are a candidate at your visit rather than promising a result. This is wound-care PRP, which is not the same as the cosmetic PRP used for skin or hair.

A typical visit starts with an evaluation of the wound and your history, a decision on whether PRP fits your situation, then the blood draw, a few minutes to concentrate the sample, and application to the wound bed, usually after it has been cleaned or debrided. Your care is directed by Dr. Christian Morrison and Dr. Asif Khan, board-certified podiatrists who hold the Certificate of Added Qualification in Amputation Prevention and Wound Care. Dr. Khan also completed fellowship training in diabetic limb salvage and wound care.
